Identifying Isotropic Events Using an Improved Regional Moment Tensor Inversion Technique
نویسندگان
چکیده
Using a regional time-domain waveform inversion for the complete moment tensor we calculate the deviatoric and isotropic source components for several explosions at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) as well as earthquakes, and collapses in the surrounding region of the western U.S. The events separate into specific populations according to their deviation from a pure double-couple and ratio of isotropic to deviatoric energy. The separation allows for anomalous event identification and discrimination between explosions, earthquakes, and collapses. Error in the moment tensor solutions and source parameters is also calculated. We investigate the sensitivity of the moment tensor solutions to Green’s functions calculated with imperfect Earth models, inaccurate event locations, and data with a low signal-to-noise ratio. We also test the performance of the method under a range of recording conditions from excellent azimuthal coverage to cases of sparse station availability, as might be expected for smaller events. Finally, we assess the depth and frequency dependence upon event size. This analysis will be used to determine the range where well-constrained solutions can be obtained. 29th Monitoring Research Review: Ground-Based Nuclear Explosion Monitoring Technologies

Moment tensor and stress inversion for an active fault system in west part of Lut-Block, Iran
Iran is one of the most tectonically active regions on the Alpine-Himalayan earthquake belt. Eastern Iran, nowadays, is one of the most active regions of the country. The occurrence of several destructive earthquakes during the past 50 years provides the evidence for the seismic activity in this region. The earthquakes are mostly concentrated around the Lut-block. There are strike-slip fault sy...

The deviatoric and isotropic source components for 17 explosions at the Nevada Test Site, as well as 12 earthquakes and 3 collapses in the surrounding region of the western US, are calculated using a regional time-domain full waveform inversion for the complete moment tensor. The events separate into specific populations according to their deviation from a pure double-couple and ratio of isotro...

Waveform inversion to determine the seismic moment tensor is a standard approach in determining the source mechanism of natural and man-made seismicity. The moment tensor is a general representation that includes the double-couple (DC) and non-double-couple sources such as explosions, opening and closing cracks, and volume compensated linear vector dipoles (CLVD). Previous studies (Ford et al.,...
متن کاملShort Note The Puzzle of the 1996 Bárdarbunga, Iceland, Earthquake: No Volumetric Component in the Source Mechanism
A volcanic earthquake with Mw 5:6 occurred beneath the Bárdarbunga caldera in Iceland on 29 September 1996. This earthquake is one of a decade-long sequence ofM 5 events at Bárdarbunga with non-double-couple mechanisms in the Global Centroid Moment Tensor catalog. Fortunately, it was recorded well by the regional-scale Iceland Hotspot Project seismic experiment. We investigated the event with a...

S U M M A R Y The seismic moment tensors for certain types of sources, such as volcanic earthquakes and nuclear explosions are expected to contain an isotropic component. Some earlier efforts to calculate the isotropic component of these sources are flawed due to an error in the method of Jost & Herrmann. We corrected the method after Herrmann & Hutchensen and found great improvement in the rec...
